FREDERICK SHOPPING CENTER RENOVATION NEARING COMPLETION; GIANT EAGLE, PET VALU, AND HAIR CUTTERY SIGN ON FOR MORE RETAIL SPACE RETAIL NEWS
CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND – As Frederick Shopping Center continues to be transformed by renovation, three of its long-time tenants are expanding their presence at the city’s longest-standing shopping center. Giant Eagle recently committed to an additional 10,000 square feet of space; while, earlier this year, Pet Valu and Hair Cuttery relocated to larger spaces at the center, increasing their presence by approximately 1,400 and 650 square feet, respectively. Pet Valu has relocated near Ashley Furniture in the space formerly occupied by Video Warehouse, and Hair Cuttery to the new pad building it shares with restaurants Bonefish, Glory Days Grill and, soon, Caballo Viejo, a locally owned and operated Latin American concept. In addition, in early May, the shopping center became home to Frederick’s third Allegany Optical, which opened in a 2,000 square-foot space formerly occupied by Manhattan Bagel. “Our renovation and expansion efforts at Frederick Shopping Center have made an enormous impact on multiple levels,” said Bob Schwenger, executive vice president for JBG Rosenfeld Retail (JBGR), the center’s owner. “From a retail perspective, the addition of Ashley Furniture, Chevy Chase Bank, Bonefish, Glory Days Grill, Randstad, Allegany Optical, and Caballo Viejo to the tenant mix, plus the expansion of Giant Eagle, Pet Valu, and Hair Cuttery, reinforce the center’s convenience for the residents of Frederick. Similarly, the façade renovation, other architectural enhancements, and improved store access give the shopping center an attractive, updated look that patrons seek. We look forward to serving area residents for another 50+ years at Frederick Shopping Center.” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the shopping center, which originally opened for business in 1957 and was Frederick’s only shopping center at the time. In addition to the façade renovation, which features brick and other durable materials, center improvements also include new lighting, sidewalks, repaving of the parking lot, and all new landscaping. Shortly, JBGR will begin an exterior renovation of the post office, and anticipates that all renovation work at the center will be complete by the end of this year, though the expansion of Giant Eagle is scheduled for completion sometime in 2008. Based in Pittsburgh, Giant Eagle currently operates only two stores in Maryland, both in Frederick. Originally built in 1957, and most recently renovated in 1990, Frederick Shopping Center is an Ashley Furniture and Giant Eagle-anchored center located on West 7th Street in Frederick, and highly visible from Route 15. The 234,400 square-foot community shopping center also boasts national retailers Staples, CVS/pharmacy, Hallmark Gold Crown, AAA, and others.
