OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM JBG ROSENFELD RETAIL
As you are aware, Wawa will be closing its doors at the College Park Shopping Center in College Park, Maryland, after nearly 12 years of doing business at the center. The fundamental detail to this story is that the decision to cease operating this store was initiated solely by Wawa. Only recently was JBG Rosenfeld Retail informed of Wawa’s intent by letter, citing that they explored numerous options relating to the future of this location. However, in the end, it appears that Wawa feels they cannot modify the College Park store to bring it up to the current standards set forth by their corporate office to be able to provide the best service possible to their customers. Much like the students at the University of Maryland, and the greater College Park community, we are sorry to see Wawa close a store that has become a College Park landmark, but understand the business decision behind it. As the landlord and owner of this center, we (JBGR) have agreed to terminate Wawa’s lease agreement to enable them to vacate the space without further consequence. As a result, we have set the wheels in motion to obtain a new, dynamic tenant for this space. As is the standard at all JBGR-owned and operated centers, providing customers with a safe and enjoyable shopping experience is paramount. In that regard, we vow to find a new tenant for the Wawa space at College Park Shopping Center that will meet the current and future needs of its patrons. |
